Three-L Gary Slossberg and alumna Jessica Budnitz ’01 are the two winners of the 2003 Gary Bellow Public Service Award. Over 250 students voted for the winners, who will be honored at a reception next fall. Slossberg is a member of the Legal Aid Bureau and treasurer of the Law School Council. He is also the president of Direct Action, an organization that seeks to build relationships with other communities in the world by sending students overseas to work during spring break. Slossberg has interned with the National Organization for Women, the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, and the Legal Resources Center in Accra, Ghana.
Budnitz is the founder and executive director of Juvenile Partners, a newly created legal clinic that will advocate on behalf of children in an attempt to break the cycle of court-involvement. Budnitz clerked in the Juvenile Division of the Trial Court of the Commonwealth and, while at HLS, was active in Harvard Defenders and the Criminal Justice Institute Clinic. Upon graduation she received the Kaufman Post-Graduate Fellowship Award for Public Interest Work.
