“Change has come to America,” said President-Elect Barack Obama ’91 following the concession of his Republican rival John McCain. With victory secured by Obama in the key swing states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida, the major media networks called the result once polls closed in California at 11:00. As the results are certified, it appears likely that the final tally will reach 364-174 electoral votes with a 52% popular mandate.
In his victory speech, the President-Elect called on Americans to unite behind his leadership and prepare to face the difficult challenges which have beset the nation. Despite the obstacles which lie ahead, he reaffirmed that just like his historic campaign for the presidency, his term in office would inspire Americans to believe, “Yes we can!”
