Though there was not a cup of coffee to be seen, a group of over 100 Latter-day Saint (LDS) students and members of the HLS community listened attentively this weekend to speakers such as Mary Ann Glendon, Dean Michael Young of George Washington Law School, and Lisa G. Sun (1st HLS woman summa cum laude) discuss whether LDS perspectives uniquely contribute to the law. Dean Kagan welcomed the group, which hailed from sixteen law schools including Stanford, Brigham Young University, the University of Chicago, Columbia, and Yale as part of the 1st Annual LDS Law Student Conference. Practitioners, including partners from Ropes & Gray and Kirkland and Ellis, also participated. The topics discussed ranged from building moral communities through laws that care for the weak of society to making religion an essential part of international legal analysis and problem solving. Though the jury is still out on whether LDS perspectives offer completely distinctive legal insights, the conference was decidedly unique in the energy exhibited by this growing legal community.
