During the evening of Thursday, April 30, NPR broke the news that Justice David Souter plans to retire at the end of this term, opening a vacancy on the Supreme Court as early as June of this year. With commentators expecting the creation of a 60 vote Democratic majority in the Senate, Obama will likely have wide leeway to consider the appointment of a replacement. Justice Souter was cited as longing to return to his native New Hampshire to pursue a simpler, rural life while young enough to be healthy and mobile.
The Harvard Law Record will continue to investigate the story and provide updated coverage of Justice Souter’s retirement and the nomination of his successor as more details emerge. Follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/hlrecord to stay informed with up-to-the-minute updates.
