A Nobel Prize winner and the former prime minister of Haiti are among the speakers who will discuss how to tackle development challenges nations face after natural disasters at a symposium to be held at the law school Friday, Nov. 19.

Amartya Sen, a Harvard professor who was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, and former Haitian Prime Minister Michele Pierre-Louis will be the keynote speakers at the HLS Law & International Development Society’s inaugural symposium. They will discuss challenges posed after two natural disasters that occurred in the past year – the floods that tore through Pakistan in July and the earthquake that devastated Haiti in January.

Two panels will round out the symposium. The first will focus on the rule of law after a natural disaster occurs and methods for protecting against the collapse of the rule of law in case of disasters. The second will address economic rights and financial flows.

“This symposium will further LIDS’ mission to recognize the growing importance of the legal profession in the international development discussion,” HLS LIDS Co-President Anne Healy said in a press release. “We look forward to the opportunity to engage with these speakers and other members of the development community.”
