Dear Editor: Your March 24 editorial (“Darfur Action Group fights the good fight”) lauded “Derek Bok, a former slave from South Sudan who spoke at the [DAG] event.” You generously praised his “tireless efforts” towards promoting awareness of the crisis in Sudan.
Like many of your readers, I was surprised to learn that the elderly, white former dean of Harvard Law School and president of Harvard University had been an African slave.
Mr. Francis Bok, however, does deserve commendation for his courage and leadership, not only in escaping from slavery, but in becoming an advocate for ending slavery worldwide. I join his hopes and prayers for a peaceful and just resolution to the tragedy in Darfur. Sincerely,Jennifer Carter, 2L
