Cardinal Avery Dulles Dies at 90
The Cardinal studied at Harvard Law School for a year and a half between his graduation from Harvard College in 1940 and his departure to serve in the Navy, after which he became a Jesuit priest and dedicated himself to Catholic theology. He was ordained as a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church in 2001 by Pope John Paul II. Cardinal Dulles, who was the son of U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, died on December 12, 2008.
Professor Emeritus Lloyd E. Ohlin Dies at 90
As the Touroff-Glueck professor of criminal justice, Dr. Ohlin, a sociologist, advanced interdisciplinary legal studies and advocated for reform of the criminal justice system in order to rehabilitate youths and prevent their permanent imprisonment in a life of crime. He served in the administrations of Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Carter. He died on December 6, 2008 at the age of 90.
Professor Emeritus Oliver Oldman ’53 Dies at 88
Learned Hand Professor of Law Emeritus Oliver Oldman taught tax at the law school from 1959 to 1993, and during his tenure he directed the International Tax Program and East Asian Legal Studies Program. He continued to commute to HLS for work until last year, when he died on December 5 at the age of 88.
