I met Nur Munir through my Indonesian landlord and we sae each other frequently during my stay. I remember the initial surprise I had when I learned that we shared intersts in Islamic studies. The perspective he adds to the field due to the combination of his native culture and studies in Egypt is noteworthy. His keeness on contributing to the field was evident. As a US citizen pre-occupied with the way Islam is expressed and percieved in my country, I find in Nur a significant, and much needed addition to our American society. Losing him would a true loss to our country.
