The Harvard Immigration Project delivered the following excerpted letter to DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff on Monday night, signed by 36 students.
Dear Secretary Chertoff:
As students and future practitioners of the law, we feel compelled to articulate our deep concerns about the impact of several DHS decisions and strategies on the rights of asylum-seekers, immigrants, and their families in the United States. Some of us are immigrants and some of us come from immigrant families. We all share a deep conviction that the important work of keeping our country safe must be carried out in a manner that is consistent with our national commitment to human and civil rights and that does justice to our nation’s immigrant heritage….
